Identity Collage: |
When this project was first introduced, it was very intimidating. The thought of making a portrait of myself and showing how I want people to see me as a person is a challenging concept to achieve. On top of that, I had to make this portrait out of many random pieces from magazines. I thought this would be nearly impossible for me to make and end up liking my results. Although, once I started working and getting my inspiration I was able to make an artwork that I am proud of and shows who I am as a person.
As an artist, I am inspired by nature and the simple things in life. I don’t do much traveling now, but that is something that I would love to do when I am older. I love sightseeing and being able to enjoy nature and its beautiful landscaping. I like to show my appreciation for everything around me by creating artwork. Taking pictures is another way that people are able to capture moments or show something in picture form. Both ways are an amazing way to show your views of art, but creating a portrait allows more value. This way I am able to express exactly how I see things in life and allow other people to see life from my perspective. An easy way of showing how I see myself and how I want people to see me is by creating some kind of self-portrait. The Identity Collage project was a good way to show how I see myself and how I make use out of my materials. While flipping through magazines, I had to think about what would best demonstrate the type of person that I am. I am a perfectionist. I like clean-cut lines, good blending, matching shapes, and an overall theme. I tried my best to demonstrate all of these things in my artwork. Because I wanted to show important traits about myself, I chose a picture that would make it possible to exaggerate those features. Two of the eye-catching parts of my artwork is the background and my t-shirt. My background is a dark-gray/black color and my t-shirt is bright multi-colored stripes. I did this on purpose because I wanted to show both sides of my personality. The plain colored background, with some little illustrations that give off a pop of color, shows a more simple, basic theme. My multi-colored striped t-shirt contrasts the dull background and balances out the artwork nicely. Besides contrasting my bright t-shirt, my dark background had a few other purposes. Having a dark gray/black background also made my face and hair stand out. It also helped bring out my darker facial features. The purpose of this was so I wouldn’t have all my colors blending together. Another reason for my dark background was for the little illustrations that were glued on. These images represent my love for travel and nature. I also included some short phrases that describe me as well. There are a lot of little details that artists put into their artwork. Each element of a piece of art says something about the artist. Self-portraits are created to display how an artist wants other people to see them. I made my self-portrait based on how I see myself. Because it is based on my opinion of myself, these types of portraits are able to change the way people view the artist. It is important to have an open mind while observing someone’s self-portrait. Everyone has their own way of expressing who they are as a person. I am glad I was able to show how I see myself through this project. |
